UN Commission on Human Rights Commends Liberia for Good Human Rights Prospects – FrontPageAfrica

Monrovia– The Head of the Africa Branch of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Madame Maarit Kohonen Sheriff, unveiled the Commission’s plans to establish a national system for the protection of human rights in the country.

The system is because the assessments have established that Liberia is a country of human prospects.

Ms. Sheriff, who resides in Geneva, Switzerland, asserted that through the system, Liberia would gain international status as the country has already established a functioning Independent National Human Rights Commission, INHCR.

According to a press release issued by the Home Office, the UN human rights official spoke on Thursday, May 12, 2022, when she paid a courtesy visit to the Home Affairs Minister, the Honorable Varney A. Sirleaf, as his Capitol Hill office in Monrovia.

She said that like many countries there are human rights issues in Liberia, but the Liberian government’s willingness to discuss them paints good human rights signals.

“One of the signals is that the government can discuss human rights issues as well as take action and allow people to discuss them without retaliation, among other things,” the human rights official pointed out. United Nations.

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Sirleaf said the government of Liberia is taking the necessary steps to address human rights issues in Liberia.

Minister Sirleaf said some of the measures include abolishing trial by trial (Sasay Wood) and banning forced initiation of individuals into Poro and Sande societies.

The statement quotes Minister Sirleaf as saying the measures are in line with the government’s constitutional mandate to ensure the protection of human and fundamental rights for all.

The Minister of Interior said that there are currently discussions between traditional leaders and various state actors on certain harmful traditional practices, including female genital mutilation.
