The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OUA), Ile-Ife, Professor Eyitayo Ogunbodede escaped lynching on Monday by thugs from the Ife community who launched a violent attack against him and members of his entourage .
One of the institution’s security guards was chased by angry thugs who sporadically fired in the air to frighten members of the university community.
Also, in the entourage were members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),
the person in charge of the security of the institution, the person in charge of public relations of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, the direction of the institution among others.
The trouble began when the vice-chancellor led his team to the grounds of the institution which had allegedly been taken over by a community of Ife, but his intention to assess the occupied part of the ground proved to be abortive as the young people Ife obviously accused went mad and ordered every occupant of vehicles in the entourage of the vice-chancellor to stay in their vehicles or be killed.
The fully armed thugs who blocked Old Ife-Ede Road where they attacked university officials on their way to the land in the Parakin district of the city, showed their weapons, their magical powers, their cutlass, their clubs, clubs, broken bottles and other weapons to signal their intent to harm members of the University community.
Reacting to the evolution, the rector of the institution, Professor Ogunbodede, condemned the evolution he described as inhuman.
He argued, however, that the institution would not cede its land to the community.
But he said the institution will always ensure that there is peace between the university and members of the community.
More details later.
