After a nationwide search, Lori A. Preiss ’89 has been named associate vice chancellor for human resources at UNCW, the university announced today.
Preiss will begin on April 18, 2022. She was previously Director of Classification and Compensation at NC State University, where she was responsible for position management, salary issues, and the development and administration of related policies for approximately 9,000 employees.

Her collaborative approach and proven experience will be instrumental in developing programs that support the professional development and well-being of UNCW employees. As the university’s director of human resources, Preiss will report to the chancellor and be a member of his cabinet. She will be responsible for providing comprehensive human resources services, including the recruitment, retention and development of the university’s more than 2,100 employees.

Thanks to great colleagues and mentors, I discovered the art and science of human resources at UNCW, and had the opportunity to hone these skills and further develop my experience at NC State,” Preiss said. “Now, I look forward to leading UNCW’s Office of Human Resources with commitment and collegiality. We have a great foundation and we will work together to create even stronger resources and support for UNCW faculty and staff.
Preiss also served as Director of EHRA Administration during her tenure at NC State. She was the principal university administrator of more than 4,000 full-time faculty, academic support, research, public service, and professional positions exempt from state human resources law.
Prior to joining NC State, Preiss was director of employment and compensation for UNCW. In this position, she guided senior managers in decisions related to organizational development, employment, classification and compensation. She also provided advice at cabinet meetings regarding key campus decisions affecting employees and ensured that all employment and compensation programs supported UNCW’s goal of employing and retaining a skilled labor.
Preiss received a Bachelor of Arts in English from UNCW and attended the UNCW Academy for Strategic Leadership in 2012.
