On June 17, elections to the United Nations Human Rights Committee for 2023-2026 were held in New York as part of the 39th meeting of states that have acceded to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, reports Trend citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

Candidates from 17 countries applied for nine vacancies on the Committee, including Farid Ahmedov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In the vote, in which 173 countries took part, the candidate from Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the Committee, obtaining 94 votes.

The United Nations Human Rights Committee, established in 1993, monitors states’ implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and is one of the main international mechanisms for the protection of human rights. man on a global level.

For the first time, a representative from Azerbaijan was elected to the 18-person Committee.
