Elder abuse resources available in 20 languages

The Australian Human Rights Commission has produced bookmarks and posters in 20 languages ​​to empower communities to recognize elder abuse and know where to seek help.

The release of these resources coincides with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (tomorrow Wednesday, June 15), a day held each year, around the world, to speak out against the abuse and exploitation of older people as a violation of human rights that has no place. in any society.

“We know that around one in six older Australians have experienced child abuse in a 12-month period, but only around a third of those victims have sought help,” the Grounded Discrimination Commissioner said. on age, Hon. Dr. Kay Patterson AO.

“As a community, we need to do more to bring this hidden problem to light, including among culturally and linguistically diverse groups and other minority groups.

“Our elder abuse awareness bookmarks and posters are now available in the 20 languages ​​most spoken by older Australians. They are designed to increase the community’s understanding of the signs of elder abuse and the National Elder Abuse Hotline.

Elder abuse can be psychological, emotional, financial, physical, sexual or neglect. It often takes place behind closed doors and is usually perpetrated by adult children or people in the older person’s circle of trust.

“It is up to each of us to end elder abuse in our communities by knowing the signs and where to get help,” Dr Patterson said.

“Let’s unite to say no to elder abuse today and every day. We are all part of the solution.
